Wading In and Wearing a Flak Jacket…

child in palestineSee, I am, pretty much, an agnostic, bordering on atheist so this topic sends my logical mind into a tailspin. The current slaughter in Gaza. Make no mistake, regardless of one-sided reporting and political rhetoric. It is, very much, a slaughter of innocents. It is no longer about Israel defending itself. And, in light of the carnage, I find myself disbelieving Israel’s justification for this action against Palestinians in Gaza. This is a David vs Goliath thing but in this, the roles are reversed.

Do I understand? No. Do I want to understand how a country can justify blowing little children to bits? No.  Not just Israel but any country. This includes Nigeria, Ethiopia, the Sudan, Iraq, Russia, Ukraine, the U.S. – Canada, England.

I have come to the opinion that Israel is using Hamas, in the same way that the Bush administration used Iraq/Saddam Hussein and the myth of weapons of mass destruction to invade the country, the same way Hitler used the Aryan myth to destroy and conquer. The same way Russia used Communism to suppress and to murder.

Israel wants Gaza, wants ALL of Gaza and as there is no way the people of the region would give up their ancestral home? Propaganda machines fire up.

God did not bequeath the area to anyone. It is not the “promised land”. It is just land. There is no divine deed of property. An absolutely absurd concept.

This criminal action by Israel is creating rifts around the world. I don’t think there is a person, with possession of their logical mind, thinks that what Israel is doing is justifiable.

On the other hand, the militant members of Hamas hold no moral ground either. Israel has the right to exist. People have the right to work, live and love regardless of religious propaganda.

That’s what this is, isn’t it? My dad can beat up your dad but on a whole different, subterranean level. Depending on what side you are on – Allah can beat up Yahweh or Yahweh can beat up Allah. I am not minimizing the horror in that statement; it is truth and the truth is so incredibly ridiculous as to defy belief.

Here’s a news flash – no god, not the Christian, not the Muslim and not the Jewish god would ever, could ever, sanction the slaughter that has been going on for centuries in “His” name. That slaughter is manmade. Man conceived, man planned and man executed. God, no god, has a hand in any of this.

Religion is at the very root of the killing. Religion and fear. One does not exist without the other. People cling to religion out of fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear that they have to make their own choices, choose their own moral ground. The need for the father figure to protect and support them in their life journey, because the alternative is that they would be, totally, responsible for the state of the world, for the condition of their own lives and their own psyches.

Someone once defined this perfectly: Man makes religion, religion does not make man. Religion is, indeed, the self-consciousness and self-esteem of man who has either not yet won through to himself, or has already lost himself again. But man is no abstract being squatting outside the world. Man is the world of man – state, society. (Karl Marx)

The atrocities in the Middle East must cease. It is already spreading like some horrendous disease of decay and corruption. It is setting people against each other – one side being called anti-Muslim, the other side being labeled anti-Semitic when, in fact, the people who are calling for an end to these attempts at mutual genocide, are anti-killing. Israelis have the right to life, the right to live, work and play. Palestinians have those same rights. The real enemies are those who call for the destruction or subjugation of the other. Those are the people who should be subjugated. The politicians, the rabbis, the Imams who call for blood. These people who urge murder and bloodshed while hiding behind their religious disguise. These are not men of god, of any god. These are the true devils, the true jinns and demons.  If a god exists, he must be weeping with despair and with frustration that his creations are mutilating each other, in his name.

The world needs to rise up and quash this conflict. The world needs to speak out and expose the lies for what they are. The world can stop this carnage. No more diplomats sipping wines at dinner, discussing while children die. Sanction everyone. Stop the flow of blood money to and from both sides. Segregate all parties from civilized humanity. If borders need to be established, let the world decide because the conflict now infects the globe. The globe, the people of this earth, are the only ones who have the right to draw lines now and these decisions must be made without god, without religion. Borders based on parity. On equality. On humanity.

Religion is not just an opiate. It is a poison.

  1. I bow to you in your ability to put this all together in one coherent article. I’ve spent a week trying to do it, and failed. I agree with your every word, and I shall pour scorn on anyone who doesn’t. Thank you.

    • It hurts the mind, the body and the soul. That we, human beings, can do this to each other, still. Regardless of science, of logic, of instant communication, of higher education, that this still can go on. I just stand in total despair.
